Peoria Unified board member will not appeal court case against district

Additional case fees pushed cost to district nearly $245,000

Peoria Unified School District governing board President Heather Rooks and her legal representatives have decided against appealing a court decision in a lawsuit she filed against the district over whether she could quote Bible versus during public meetings.

In an about face, Rooks’s lawyer David Hacker said they will not attempt to appeal the ruling. Hacker is the vice president of legal services & senior counsel at Texas-based First Liberty Institute, a conservative legal organization.

“The school district took the position in court that they are not going to stop Heather from quoting Bible verses, so there is no reason to appeal. She essentially won already,” Hacker said.
