Peoria police identify suspect in officer-involved shooting

A man faces an aggravated assault charge stemming from a traffic stop and officer-involved shooting in Peoria.

Samuel Joseph Denk, 23, of Peoria, was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond Tuesday after his release from the hospital.

He had been pulled over March 27 by a Peoria sergeant for a traffic violation near 83rd Avenue and Cholla Street. Records indicate the vehicle Mr. Denk was in had no tail lights.

Peoria police identify suspect in officer-involved shooting

A man faces an aggravated assault charge stemming from a traffic stop and officer-involved shooting in Peoria.

Samuel Joseph Denk, 23, of Peoria, was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail in lieu of a $25,000 bond Tuesday after his release from the hospital.

He had been pulled over March 27 by a Peoria sergeant for a traffic violation near 83rd Avenue and Cholla Street. Records indicate the vehicle Mr. Denk was in had no tail lights.

Police said when the sergeant approached the vehicle, Mr. Denk allegedly reached for a gun in between his legs. The sergeant told Mr. Denk to not reach for the gun but was ignored. The sergeant  fired at least one round, striking Mr. Denk in the face.

"The sergeant said he had no other option than to shoot," a probable cause statement reads. "He said he was in fear for his life when the driver reached down and grabbed the firearm after he told him not to grab it, and to put his hands on the wheel."

The sergeant was not harmed during the incident.

Mr. Denk was taken to the hospital where he had surgery March 29, records state. He was released Monday, April 1.

Police state he was arrested at his home April 2 near 87th Avenue and Cactus Road.

Mr. Denk is due in court Tuesday, April 9.
