As a member of the West Valley Investigative Response Team, the Peoria Police Department has assumed the investigation into a Surprise Police Department officer involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024.
Just before 4 p.m., detectives with the Surprise Police Department were conducting surveillance on a suspect who was involved in a felony investigation. The suspect was identified as a 23-year-old male.
Detectives attempted to take the suspect into custody in the parking lot of Walmart located at 13770 W. Bell Road, Surprise.
The suspect attempted to flee the area in his vehicle and struck a detective sergeant with the Surprise Police Department. The detective sergeant fired at least one round at the suspect, striking him. As other detectives and officers arrived on scene, they were able to take the suspect into custody and give aid. The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital where he is receiving care. The detective sergeant was also taken to a local hospital for an evaluation and was later released.
Once the suspect is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
The suspect is facing one count of aggravated assault.
No officers or bystanders were injured during this incident.
The Peoria Police Department will remain the lead investigating agency on this case and will handle all media inquiries.
