Peoria Fire-Medical cautions residents to be safe using fireworks over July Fourth weekend

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, the Peoria Fire-Medical Department is encouraging the safe and responsible use of fireworks, which includes following all state and local laws, as well as safe handling and disposal of consumer fireworks.

Department spokesman Mark Barbee said because of extreme dry weather conditions, fires can quickly spread to a home or into the wildland-urban interface areas, so it is extremely important to take precautions during the Independence Day holiday weekend.

He said young children should not be allowed to play with fireworks under any circumstances, and older children should only be permitted to handle fireworks under close adult supervision.
