Peoria armed robbery suspect remains in hospital after officer-involved shooting

Posted

A 17-year-old suspect is in the hospital after he reportedly robbed an auto store at gunpoint and was subsequently shot by a Peoria police officer.

According to Peoria police, dispatchers received a call around 9 p.m. Monday from a person who said a male with a bandana over his face and armed with a gun ran into the AutoZone, 8050 N. 91st Ave.

The suspect reportedly had two employees at gunpoint and it appeared they were heading toward a back room.

A Peoria officer was in the area and arrived at the store within two minutes of the call, police state in a release.

When the officer exited his vehicle, he could not see inside the store. The officer entered the store and heard a commotion down an aisle in the area behind the counter. The officer went toward the noise, turned the corner, and saw a suspect with a gun in his hand and physically struggling with an employee.

"To protect the life of the employee and his own life, the officer gave verbal commands and fired one round at the suspect striking him in the shoulder area," police state.

The suspect fell to the ground and complied with the commands. Police arrested the suspect and provided aid while paramedics responded.

The suspect was transported by ground to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He remains there as of Tuesday afternoon.

An employee suffered minor injuries during the incident from the suspect, police said. However, no other people or officers were injured.

Detectives recovered the suspect's handgun. The officer involved in the shooting was wearing and had activated his body-worn camera.

The suspect is a 17-year-old male from Peoria. Police will identify him when he is released from the hospital and booked into jail.

"We appreciate the patience and support of our community members while we conduct a thorough investigation," police stated.

The incident marked the third officer-involved shooting in the Valley in 2019. On Friday, three suspects were arrested as a result of an armed robbery in Avondale. Another was shot and killed.

Tuesday afternoon, Tempe police responded to the Valley's fourth officer-involved shooting this year near 48th Street and Baseline Road. No officers were injured. A suspect was pronounced dead.
