I’m a 53-year-old mom of three struggling with the rising cost of my insulin. Monthly co-pays balloon while my coverage narrows. I’ve had to start rationing my insulin.
This is shameful in a country as wealthy as ours. Sick people should be able to access their medications. We might be able to do so if Pharmacy Benefit Managers weren't allowed to disregard patients like me and put our lives at risk.
These insurance industry subsidiaries make big money when drug prices are high and they appear to only care about profits.
They keep cheaper generics out of patients’ hands, take drug rebates from consumers and even force patients into expensive pharmacies from which they earn money.
Congress needs to forget about Most Favored Nation and its useless foreign pricing plans and instead focus on preventing PBMs from hurting sick people. MFN won’t make my medications more accessible or increase my coverage.
I need insulin to stay alive. I’m calling on our lawmakers to rein in these PBMs. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Georgia recently took steps in that direction with the PBM Reform Act, which will cut the link between PBM profits and drug costs. I encourage Congress to support these reforms to lower drug costs and stop PBMs from profiting off sick people and their misfortunes.
