Liberty High School classroom evacuated due to fire

PUSD: Calling it fire is part of district's emergency protocols; it was a minor incident, fire was out within seconds

Posted

Liberty High School was evacuated Wednesday due to a fire.

The Peoria Unified's communications department sent a letter out to district staff and families this afternoon informing them the school was evacuated due to a fire.

The letter stated an extension cord plugged into a student council classroom outlet sparked a short, quick flame in one of the classrooms and staff swiftly responded to address it.

PUSD spokesperson Danielle Airey said calling fire is part of our emergency protocols; it was a very minimal disruption, and the fire was out within seconds.

"Calling it fire is just part of our emergency protocol," she said.

The flames were contained quickly and the fire department was contacted. Students in the immediate area were evacuated from the room and the fire department was contacted immediately. Firefighters assesed the situation, confirmed the campus was safe, and students returned to class, according to the district.

"The safety of our students remains our highest priority. We are so grateful for our partnership with the police and fire departments who respond quickly to support our campus, and for our staff who ensure everyone is safe," the letter stated.

The district asks that families download the ParentSquare app to receive quick and timely updates from schools, and from the district for updates.
