Hot-button issues divide Peoria Unified, bring safety concerns

At a recent Peoria Unified School District governing board meeting, tempers flared among members of the public after the meeting was nearly moved online due to increasing concern from school board members and local police that it could have been difficult to maintain the peace as the crowd became disruptive.

The heated audience was assuaged as school board members continued the meeting in person, but the incident was emblematic of the climate that has pitted some school board and administration members against parents, which has led to a greater police presence at public meetings.

As the situation has played out in Peoria, it is being repeated through out the Valley, Arizona and the U.S. It has prompted elected officials in PUSD and around the country to up security.
