Parents file complaint against Peoria Unified teacher

Students removed from school after ‘The Jungle’ assignment

Former Peoria Unified parents claim a Sunset Heights Elementary School teacher violated their rights when she allegedly gave their daughter an assignment they viewed to be too “violent and inappropriate for middle school students” after they earlier agreed she would have an alternate assignment.

Amy and Shawn Souza submitted a formal complaint to the Arizona State Board of Education against social studies teacher Holli Trentowski for what they claimed was violating their rights to influence their daughter’s education to “opt her out of harmful material,” and in the process, they say, violated state law that protect their rights as parents.

The Souzas removed their two daughters from Sunset Heights, 9687 W. Adam Ave. in Peoria, because of the alleged incident that occurred during winter and spring of the 2020-21 school year.
