Maricopa County drug task force detectives have arrested a paralegal who is accused of attempting to smuggle synthetic cannabinoids on paperwork submitted to officials at the 4th Avenue Jail, authorities said Friday.
Christopher Byers submitted paperwork on Aug. 14 for an inmate at the jail, according to a release from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. The paperwork was inspected, and due to multiple pages being discolored, a field test was conducted, the release stated.

The test showed positive for synthetic cannabinoids (Spice, K2, JWH and analytes).
A search warrant was executed for Byers’ home, “where multiple items of evidence were located,” the release stated.
A search also took place for several inmates at the jail, where a MCSO K-9 alerted authorities to the presence of drugs. Papers similar to those brought in by Byers were tested and returned positive for synthetic cannabinoids, according to officials.
An investigation is continuing, and charges are pending for the inmates involved.
The Maricopa County Drug Suppression Task Force is comprised of several agencies, including: MCSO, Buckeye PD, Tempe PD, Surprise PD, Mesa PD, Casa Grande, DEA, ADCRR, Postal Inspector, and the Attorney General's Office.
