Paradise Valley to keep post office

Paradise Valley has announced an agreement with the U.S. Postal Service that will keep the community’s Town Hall Post Office — the only postal location within the town limits — open with no interruption in service.

The Paradise Valley Town Council will receive a presentation on the agreement at its meeting at 6 p.m. today.

On June 2, the town received notice from USPS that it intended to exercise the termination clause in its contract with the town and shutter the post office on Sept. 30. There was no further explanation for the closure.

Under the new agreement, USPS will continue operating the post office. USPS does not pay to maintain the location. As the town owns the building, it pays for supplies and personnel.

The town hall post office, 6401 E. Lincoln Drive, has operated in Paradise Valley for more than 60 years.

“This is a big win for Paradise Valley,” Mayor Mark Stanton stated in a press release. “When we received the termination notice in June, many of our residents made it clear they wanted to keep the post office open.  I took the lead on the issue and, working with Town Manager Andrew Ching, we investigated options for appeal or engaging other postal service options.”

Stanton stated the agreement follows months of collaboration between town leadership, regional and federal USPS officials and the office of Republican U.S. Rep. David Schweikert.

“We spent the summer exploring every avenue with the USPS and explored other options to preserve local postal service for town residents, Stanton stated in the release. “As the USPS is a federal entity, I reached out to Congressman Schweikert, who represents the town of Paradise Valley.  The congressman and his team met with me and the town manager throughout the summer on the issue.”

According to Stanton, Schweikert and his staff helped to create a pathway for USPS to develop a contract amendment that keeps the postal service open and available to Paradise Valley residents.

Beyond being a post office, the location has been a nexus for an assortment of community activities.

“Keeping our unique post office open protects an important part of Paradise Valley’s character,” Stanton stated.  I am proud that we found a solution that continues providing postal service without interruption.”
