Palm fronds collapse on tree trimmer in East Valley, killing him

A 57-year-old man died Sunday morning after a palm skirt, which officials said can weigh hundreds of pounds, fell on him while he was trimming a tree in Tempe, police said.

Flavio Sesmas Maya died at the scene near Maple Avenue and 12th Street.

While he was working  “a section of palm fronds, commonly referred to as a ‘palm skirt,’ fell onto the worker while he was elevated,” police stated in a release.
