Painfully young Mountainside football makes strides

School’s first varsity team plays season with 14 underclassmen, some from Surprise

There was zero chance the initial season of Mountainside football would be anything but brutally difficult.

The first high school in the Nadaburg District, located in Wittmann for now but including students from in and around the Desert Oasis development in northwest Surprise, decided to play varsity 8-man football this year.

The Wolves went up against experienced varsity squads with a roster of 14 players, all freshmen or sophomores. Coach Chris Duane said only two players entered this fall with varsity football experience.
