Los Angeles-bred Latin fusion band Ozomatli will headline 2023 Somos Peoria, a staple Hispanic Heritage Month event, in downtown Peoria 4-10 p.m. Sept. 30.
“Somos Peoria is an exciting tradition in downtown Peoria with great entertainment and food in a dynamic street festival,” said Peoria Director of Arts, Culture and Library Services Marylou Stephens. “Be sure to save the date and bring the entire family!”
Ozomatli is known nationwide for their incorporation of Latin and world music influences with funk and hip-hop sounds. The band formed in Los Angeles in 1995 and have distinguished themselves with a collaborative, energetic blend of multi-cultural music that has earned them three Grammys, four Hollywood Bowl shows, a TED Talk, among other recognitions and awards, according to a news release.
Opening for Ozomatli at Somos Peoria is R&B band, Color Me Badd, and the internationally-recognized Mariachi Divas.
Color Me Badd is best known for their singles "I Ador, Mi Amor" and "All 4 Love", the group has sold over 12 million records worldwide, had two #1 hit singles, nine top 40 hits and a triple-platinum album. They were nominated for two Grammy awards, won two Soul Train Music Awards and one American Music Award, and were nominated for five others.
Mariachi Divas is an all-female band known for its eclectic array of music ranging from mariachi classics to jazz and pop. Their music is an elegant approach to the mariachi tradition, and they have been the official mariachi band of the Disneyland Resort since 2003.
“Securing Ozomatli, Color Me Badd, and Mariachi Divas for Somos Peoria this year is just the beginning of a great event,” said Ray Arvizu with Arvizu Advertising. “We are honored to partner with the city of Peoria to bring the community together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.”
This year’s event will feature two stages of live music in the streets of downtown Peoria.
In addition to the live music at Somos Peoria, there will be a variety of cultural activities and performances including Ballet Folklorico, Luche Libre, traditional food and beverages, and a free kid zone with rides, games, and more.
General admission is free and VIP tickets are available for $40-$75.
