Outgoing Phoenix police chief highlights recent reforms

City now adherent to '8 Can't Wait'

In a review of Phoenix police’s policy changes in recent years, outgoing Police Chief Jeri Williams highlighted that Phoenix is now compliant with “8 Can’t Wait,” which encourages eight policies data has shown lead to police killing fewer people.

“8 Can’t Wait is a product of Campaign Zero’s mission to encourage policy makers to focus on solutions with the strongest evidence of effectiveness of reducing police violence,” Williams told city council on Sept. 13. “The 8 Can’t Wait suggests that agencies that have all of these eight policies in practice have a tendency to have fewer law enforcement fatalities.”

Williams said she believes some of these policies have helped create a safer atmosphere for both the public and police.
