One person died after a Phoenix Police vehicle was struck by a car Thursday near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, according to a social media post from Phoenix Police.
The police vehicle was in the middle of transporting a prisoner at the time of the crash, the post stated.
The crash happened just before 9 a.m., said Phoenix police Sgt. Phil Krynsky in an email.
"...The second vehicle involved ignited on fire just after the collision," Krynsky said. "Phoenix Fire responded to the scene to extinguish the fire. The driver of this vehicle was pronounced deceased on scene."
Detectives are investigating how the collision happened, Krynsky said.
The driver of the sedan sustained fatal injuries — while the officer and prisoner were taken to an area hospital as a precaution, the post read.
The officer was making a southbound turn onto 35th Avenue from westbound Thunderbird Road., according to a press release.
The other vehicle was traveling eastbound on Thunderbird when it struck the police SUV, the press release stated.
"Due to the circumstances of the incident, the victim will need to be identified by the Office of the Medical Examiner," Scherer said in an email.
