Oldest living retired Phoenix firefighter dies at 105
Benny Ashley, a retired Phoenix firefighter who helped found the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System, died Saturday morning. He was 105.
The Phoenix Fire Department stated on a social media site that Ashley, who joined the department in 1942, was the oldest living retired Phoenix firefighter.
Ashley took time away from fire service to serve in World War II and the Korean War.

Benny Ashley, a retired Phoenix firefighter who helped found the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System, died Saturday morning. He was 105.
The Phoenix Fire Department stated on a social media site that Ashley, who joined the department in 1942, was the oldest living retired Phoenix firefighter.
Ashley took time away from fire service to serve in World War II and the Korean War.
His work to form the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System in the 1960s established the benefits that firefighters and law enforcement have today.
