Officials look to curb Light Rail assaults

Valley Metro, Phoenix PD ramp up security efforts; Most assaults are between people known to one another

A light rail passenger in the Valley is assaulted about once every other day, on average. About once every six days, a light rail security guard is assaulted.

In light of those statistics, from a Valley Metro study from January through July, and continued complaints from the public, Valley Metro and Phoenix Police are ramping up security efforts on light rail in the city.

Valley Metro CEO Jessica Mefford-Miller clarified the “overwhelming majority” of assaults on light rail were between people known to one another and in most of those cases there are not charges pressed.
