Off-duty officers help Phoenix PD fill most schools’ requests for new SROs

The Phoenix Police Department had more requests for officers on school campuses for the new school year than it could fill, but off-duty officers have helped fill most of the gaps.

Phoenix Police was prepared to staff its 71 “legacy” schools that had already had a school resource officer in prior years, but 53 schools put in new requests for SROs for the 2023-24 school year, a 75% increase.

Phoenix Police is facing an overall staffing shortage of about 560 sworn officers.
