October events to benefit Valley single mothers group

Iris Ortega was no stranger to relying on government help.

As a kid, Ortega, a Phoenix resident, remembers when her and her siblings would comb her apartment complex looking for two shiny quarters in the summer sun to take her brothers and sister to the public pool.

She is the oldest of five children and often stepped in as a caretaker for her siblings while her mother was working a minimum-wage job.
