Number of Phoenix police officers dropping by 11 each month

The Phoenix Police Department is losing 11 more officers than it is adding each month, on average, since July 2020.

The department has offered hiring incentives and designated a position to solely focus on working with officers to keep them on the force longer, but those changes have yet to yield the desired results.

“That’s a significant number,” Executive Assistant Police Chief Michael Kurtenbach, “and it’s not a number, despite our best efforts, that we’re seeing turn around.”
