Number of active registered voters in Arizona nears 4 million

The number of active registered voters approached the 4 million mark as of Jan. 2, after more than 50,000 people registered to vote between October and December 2019.

According to a release from the Arizona Secretary of State, a total of 3.92 million people are active registered voters in Arizona, up from 3.87 million reported during the last quarterly report in October.

“We have several upcoming elections this year, so now is the perfect time for Arizonans who are eligible to vote to either register or update their voter registration,” Secretary Katie Hobbs stated.

This year, only the Democratic Party is participating in the March 17 Presidential Preference Election. Therefore, under Arizona law, only voters registered with the Democratic Party by Feb. 18 will be eligible to participate in that election.

The latest voter registration report also shows the number of inactive registered voters slightly increased, by more than 4,000 voters, the release states. An inactive voter is still eligible to participate in elections but is labeled inactive if two election mailings sent to the registration address are returned undeliverable, and the voter does not submit a new registration form or otherwise update his or her address.

An inactive voter is returned to active status if they update their registration or vote in any election in the next two general election cycles. As of Dec. 1, 2019, more than 420,000 registered voters are inactive in Arizona.

Additionally, signature requirements for candidate nomination are calculated based on the latest voter registration numbers, which increased for all political parties in 2020.

The complete quarterly voter registration report that includes county, congressional district and legislative district information is available online or by calling 1-877-THE-VOTE.
