North Peoria area shut down due to hazmat incident

Police closed a roadway in north Peoria April 23 due to a hazmat incident.

Officers were called to the area of 91st Avenue between Deer Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads around 10 p.m. when a Tesla crashed into a pole due to the driver having a medical emergency.

The Tesla caught on fire and the hazmat team had to be called  because the car uses lithium-ion batteries, which produce intense heat and release toxic fumes.
