Normal operations resume at Maricopa County animal shelters after disease outbreak

Maricopa County Animal Care & Control has returned to its normal intake process after additional tests have come back negative for strep zoo.

The shelters affected also have been deep cleaned, officials stated in a release.

On March 22, MCACC decided to allow admittance of stray animals in emergency cases only at its west shelter. That ban was expanded a week later to the east shelter due to the disease.

Maricopa County Animal Care & Control has returned to its normal intake process after additional tests have come back negative for strep zoo.

The shelters affected also have been deep cleaned, officials stated in a release.

On March 22, MCACC decided to allow admittance of stray animals in emergency cases only at its west shelter. That ban was expanded a week later to the east shelter due to the disease.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for helping us while we eradicate the disease from the shelter,” communications supervisor Kim Powell said.

“There were a lot of long days and late nights, but by having only a limited number of dogs coming in, it allowed us to get the deep cleaning done in a timely manner and ensure every dog received medication.”

As part of the outbreak, MCACC treated all the dogs in its care with antibiotics that are effective against strep zoo as a preventative measure. Once dogs are on this medication, they are protected from the illness, officials said
