ROAD DIETS

No harmony found on Scottsdale hot-button issue

City Council discuss controversy of making space for bike lanes

The Scottsdale City Council’s two and a half hour discussion on road diets that lasted until almost 10 p.m. May 16 was filled with accusations, disagreements and strong words but ended with little consensus on how to handle the issue in the future.

The only consensus that seemed to come out of the meeting was at least some council members believe the term road diet should be given a precise definition in the city’s transportation action plan.

City staff have used the term to mean the reduction of a traffic lane by restriping the road for the sake of creating a bike lane. However, in other parts of the county, city’s have narrowed streets by pinching curbs closer together and calling that a road diet.
