Glendale won’t be hosting Glendale Glitters this year, but lights will shine nonetheless — and even earlier than usual.
Heidi Barriga, the city’s Special Events Administrator, reported at a September workshop that Glendale will trend away from the Glitters event that through 2020 took place for 27 years. Last year’s installment kept the event’s signature — the 1.7-million light display in Historic Downtown — but did away with the traditional first-lighting event that in years past drew thousands of guests downtown out of gathering precautions due to the COVID pandemic.
The city will continue its light display and will again go without the party-like atmosphere for an initial lighting. The lights will turn on earlier than usual this year, though, starting on Friday, Nov. 19. The goal, as Barriga noted, is to allow for family and friends visiting for Thanksgiving to enjoy the lights while in town, whereas the lights used to turn on after Thanksgiving.
