NIL challenges hit high schools, football player from Peoria

Offer to design T-shirt for Centennial family serves as test case, costs player 2 games

Camren Durfee cannot wait for that day this summer, when he’s just another fairly anonymous high school offensive lineman trying to set a personal record on his next lift.

The senior-to-be at Centennial High School didn’t ask to become the face of name, image and likeness — better known as NIL — in Arizona prep sports. He just saw an Instagram post in February for a cool T-shirt design that his family could wear to games in his senior year.

In less than ten minutes, California-based apparel company Hyperlete produced a shirt with his face and a Centennial logo on it, based on his verbal OK — with no attempt by the company to contact his parents, enter into a contract or explain to Durfee he would receive 15% of the profits. He had even less of a concept the simple act of including his face and an official logo with the shirt jeopardized his senior season.
