New Salt River horse contract delayed

A new caretaker for the broncos of the Salt River won’t be determined quickly after one group vying to win a five-year state contract is disputing language in the original bidding request.

The current management group, the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group that works with Arizona Department of Agriculture, complained the agency shouldn’t have the ability to remove horses from where they reside due to a law that relates to “stray” livestock.

The state wants to remove three adult horses for every horse that is born, according to Simone Netherlands, president of the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group.
