Despite a $377.5 million increase in overall spending on instruction, more than half of the school districts in Arizona spent a smaller percentage of their dollars in classroom instruction in 2022 compared to 2021, according to a new report from the state’s Auditor General’s Office.
That was not the case for Mesa Unified School District, which spent more in 2022 than 2021; and the district beat the state average both years.
Statewide, school districts in 2022 used 54.5% of funding for instruction. That compares to 55.3% in 2021.
