New Phoenix exhibition features earliest Madonna instruments

One of the biggest moments in the impossibly cool musical life of Madonna didn’t happen on a stage in front of thousands of fans or at a podium in a spotlight receiving a golden award.

She was broke, living in a friend’s place in New York City in 1978, and learning to play a borrowed acoustic guitar.

“Homeless, penniless, with no visible career prospects,” author Christopher Andersen wrote in his 1991 book “Madonna: Unauthorized,” published by Simon & Schuster.
