New Gilbert ordinances take aim at teen violence

Council bans brass knuckles for minors, 'unruly gatherings'

Urged on by people affected by teen violence, Gilbert Town Council voted unanimously May 21 to pass ordinances on brass knuckles and unruly gatherings as a response to residents’ ongoing concerns.

The brass knuckles ordinance outlaws the sale to or possession by anyone under age 18 of the weapons designed to increase the effect of a blow done with a fist. The town also made it so that the weapon does not have to be constructed of brass.

The unruly gathering ordinance will help police gain control of large parties that grow out of control — frequently thrown by teenagers with underage drinking and drug use involved. Such a party in Queen Creek last October was where San Tan Valley teenager Preston Lord was killed, beaten to death by other teenagers.
