LOCALIZATION:

US CENSUS-INTERNATIONAL MIGRATION-LOCALIZE IT: International migrants were attracted to some of the largest, most urban counties in the U.S. last year, often blunting population losses from locals moving out and helping urban cores recover from the loss of residents and businesses during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. We provide context and resources from the Census Bureau for localizing the story. Find the latest Localize It guides.

SPRING HOMEBUYING SEASON-LOCALIZE IT: Shop for a home now or hold out for possibly lower mortgage rates? That’s a question confronting many home shoppers this spring homebuying season amid widespread expectations that mortgage rates could come down once the Federal Reserve begins lowering its own short-term rate. We point you to resources on home sales and prices and offer an embeddable map of median home prices by metro area. Find the latest Localize It guides.

US--EARTH DAY-LOCALIZE IT: More than 190 countries celebrate Earth Day on April 22 each year. US--MACKENZIE SCOTT-LOCALIZE IT: Much about billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott’s giving remains a mystery, but a recent round of grants to nonprofits offer some insights. We offer a database of all the gifts, viewable by state, along with reporting threads and other resources. Find the latest Localize It guides.

US BOOK BANS-LIBRARIANS-LOCALIZE IT: Across the country, as book bans and attempted bans have soared to the highest levels in decades, some lawmakers are considering a new threat: Crippling lawsuits, hefty fines, and even imprisonment for distributing books regarded as obscene or otherwise inappropriate. And while no librarian or educator has been sued or jailed, they are having their intended result, with books being preemptively removed. We provide reporting suggestions and resources for looking at related legislation in at least 15 states. Find the latest Localize It guides.

US--NEBRASKA SALES TAX INCREASE-LOCALIZE IT: Nebraska lawmakers advanced a bill Tuesday that would raise the state’s sales tax to 6.5% -- one of the highest in the country.
