Local shelter leader speaks on importance of pets caught in domestic violence situations

National Dog Day brings out reasons survivors need to bring their pets

People unfamiliar with the scope and magnitude of what domestic violence victims endure may not consider the pets involved in their lives as well as many remain in dangerous situations out of concern for their pet’s safety.

In recognition of National Dog Day, on Aug. 26, a spotlight is put on pets to help people understand how they are also affected by domestic violence, which victims may stay in abusive relationships for fear of abuse being inflicted upon the animals, further perpetuating an abusive cycle against pets and victims.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, there is a link between pet abuse and domestic violence as abusers often exert power and control over the family by threatening, harming or killing animals. Reportedly, abusers often harm pets to punish the victims for leaving, or to manipulate the individual to stay.
