NAACP Arizona Conference President warns Scottsdale of possible legal action

City responds by cutting off correspondence to NAACP Arizona Conference

The City of Scottsdale’s response to the NAACP Arizona Conference’s letter calling for City Manager Greg Caton to resign or be removed has drawn the NAACP’s further ire.

“Publicly labeling the NAACP as ‘liars’ in response to our advocacy is factually unsupported, dismissive, and inconsistent with the professional standards expected of a city manager,” NAACP Arizona Conference President Sarah Tyree wrote on Jan. 25 to Caton, Mayor Lisa Borowsky and the rest of the city council “As the city’s chief administrative officer, your role requires neutrality, restraint, and respect for community stakeholders — even, and especially, when their perspectives challenge your own.

"Such statements undermine public confidence, erode trust in civic institutions, and expose the city to unnecessary reputational and legal risk,” she continued. “They also raise serious concerns about administrative impartiality and the city’s willingness to engage constructively with civil rights organizations representing historically marginalized communities.”
