Mustangs' track champs make junior year leap

Sunrise Mountain's Kaye, Marshall burst onto scene at Division II state

One of them had made a cameo in the state track and field finals as a freshman.

But for Sunrise Mountain juniors Kaitlyn Kaye and Malachi Marshall, May 13 and 15 was their first true chance at the big stage. Both debuted impressively, winning one state title in dominant fashion and adding a second-place finish in a secondary event.

On May 13 at Perry High School in Gilbert, Marshall soared to the Division II triple jump crown with a leap of 45-5, nearly a foot better than second place. On May 15, Kaye blew out the field in the 800 meters, as her 2:17.18 was more than two seconds better than Gilbert Williams Field junior Kianna Jones.
