MusicaNova brings ‘alt classical’ season to Phoenix, Tempe

Six-concert lineup pairs lesser-known works by familiar composers with music from voices outside the classical mainstream

MusicaNova will explore what it calls “alt classical” during its 2026-27 season, presenting three orchestra concerts and three chamber performances in Phoenix and Tempe.

The orchestra season opens at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at Tempe Center for the Arts with “Mahler, the Unrequited Narcissist.” MusicaNova will perform the original 1889 version of Gustav Mahler’s “Symphonic Poem,” which he repeatedly revised before it evolved into his Symphony No. 1. The reconstructed early version includes music Mahler later removed, including the “Blumine” movement.

“Beethoven: Walking Toward Light” follows Feb. 12 at Tempe Center for the Arts, pairing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 with works by Bohdana Frolyak, Avril Coleridge-Taylor and Vincent d’Indy. KBAQ announcer and pianist Greg Kostraba and the Sylvan Trio will perform d’Indy’s rarely heard Triple Concerto for piano, cello and flute.
