Mother of killed Red Mountain teen criticizes Mesa for response to teen violence

Olga Lopez, the mother of Jeremiah Aviles, the Red Mountain High School teen who was killed in a fatal shooting in May 2023, criticized the Mesa City Council members for their response to teen violence during a Feb. 5 meeting.

Aviles was killed when visiting a friend’s home. The primary suspect, Peter “PJ” Clabron III, was charged with manslaughter for allegedly accidentally shooting Aviles while playing with a gun in his bedroom.

At the meeting, Lopez said she sent an email to Mesa Mayor John Giles on June 6, 2023. She told the council the concerns she expressed in the email regarding teen violence have still not been addressed.
