The Surprise City Council voted April 16 to add more residential space and reduce commercial capacity for an 880-acre future master-planned community in the city’s northwest area.

The measure was passed 5-2 after concerned residents stood up and spoke out to fight to keep their neighborhood rural.

The Desert Trails development is east of 219th Avenue and south of Pinnacle Peak Road in Surprise. The development, once named Fox Trails, received zoning approval in 2001.
