• EPCOR Water Arizona Inc. won a franchise extension by a wide margin in the only ballot item for Surprise residents in the November general election. In what was technically a special election, voters overwhelmingly approved a 25-year extension for the company to continue to serve about one-third of Surprise homes and businesses.
• Water shortages at Lake Mead brought a Tier 1 shortage declaration for the upcoming year, but Surprise officials told residents it wouldn’t affect their taps. Instead, the city enacted an updated drought plan, which focused on educating the public about water conservation.
