Miller: Disappointed in heartlessness of Sun City community
I live in Sun City north of Bell Road and this is in regards to the article (“Overlay decision in limbo,” Sun City Independent, Dec. 7, 2022).
I was disappointed in the “heartlessness” of our community regarding the request of an age exception for the 96-year-old who needed family care this past summer. There is a reason only 80% of the community needs to be 55 or older, and this I believe is one of those reasons.
Shame on Sun City. We should have allowed this exception until the woman passes away, and made that part of the approval. If you live to be 96, you will likely need help.

I realize everyone is afraid of losing the age overlay like Youngtown did. Do we know how many people under 55 live in Sun City? I suspect we are afraid to find out! But we should find out, monitor it and allow “genuine” hardship requests that pose no danger to the overlay. Some in the Valley view us as old, angry, rude and set in our ways. Certainly not true for most of our residents, but certainly true on this subject.
I do not know the reasons behind the latest request, but if a genuine hardship is involved, there should be some genuine consideration. If not, then fine.
