Miller: DACA a symbol of what’s wrong with America

Posted

There is another election period coming up in August followed by a national election in November.

There are a number of candidates telling us what they are going to do if elected.

And in most cases, they can’t do what they say they are going to do.

Remember DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, a program created by the president of the United States? A program that many electees swore they were going to fix? Ten years and still going on. It is a symbol of one of the most basic problems of what has gone very wrong with America.

There was a time in this country that you had to prove you were a citizen of the United States to be eligible to vote, get a driver’s license, qualify for government benefits and programs or financial assistance of any kind and in some cases to be considered for a government job. Not anymore.

A noncitizen person had to get approval to enter the country and apply for citizenship. Now you just have to walk across a border and you get a bus trip to New York or some other city so we have more room at the border for more people to enter the country illegally.

Those elected to office who have the power and responsibility to fix DACA and to clarify laws and regulations to ensure only United States citizens are eligible to receive any federal funds and benefits paid for by the taxpaying citizens of the country have not shown the desire nor the integrity to stand up and fix what is wrong.

We have thousands of our citizens living on the streets in numerous cities because they are destitute while we have politicians making trips to border cities and complaining about how we are treating illegal border crossing people. Why don’t we just return those that entered illegally to the country they came in from immediately, and use the funds spent on them to take care of our homeless citizens.

Obviously, our elected officials are not interested in doing what is right for America. They chose to do nothing and like DACA, hope it will eventually go away. Remember, we tried to close the border but Congress stopped that action.

I wish we could find enough people to run for Congress that were focused on requiring citizenship for residents for voting and entitlements and federal funding support and assistance. Then we would have a chance to ensure we were doing what is right for the United States of America.
