Getting around the far-flung city of Surprise has long been a macro-level problem for residents unwilling — or unable — to drive a lot of miles through a city with little bus service.
After years of discussion, the Surprise City Council and government went with a micro solution — literally. Surprise will begin a two-year, $1.519 million pilot program in March that is classified as microtransit.
Microtransit is an updated type of ride-hailing service designed for short trips and uses small vehicles, seating no more than five customers, including those that require Americans with Disabilities Act-friendly service. Kristen Taylor, senior management analyst for the city’s public works department, presented an update on the pilot program during the Dec. 20 council work session.
