Michael J. Cravatta, 80, of Sun City West, Arizona, passed away on June 12, 2025, following a year-long illness that began unexpectedly during a family cruise. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries in France and continued treatment and rehabilitation back home, Mike faced ongoing health challenges. He underwent two additional surgeries with the hope of returning to his active lifestyle and his love of golf. Sadly, just before Mother’s Day, an undetected bacterial infection rapidly progressed, and it was discovered too late.
Mike was born on August 21, 1944, in Savanna, Illinois, where he spent his early years. He graduated from the University of Dubuque and proudly served his country in Vietnam. After returning home, he met Kathleen, and the two were married and continued their education at Eastern Illinois University. Mike later earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University. He dedicated his career to teaching before becoming Dean of Math and Science at Richland Community College in Decatur, Illinois.
In 2005, Mike and Kathleen retired to their home at Lake of the Ozarks but eventually settled in Sun City West, Arizona, where they have lived for the past 18 years. An avid golfer, Mike could often be found on the course, unless he was watching his beloved Chicago Cubs or spending time with his grandchildren, whom he adored.
Mike is survived by his father, loving wife, Kathleen; his son, Dr. Chad (Carrie) Cravatta; and three cherished grandchildren: Rylann, Amorey, and Sullivan. He is also survived by his sisters, Christine Fronczak and Karen (Ted) Bots. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Ryan Robert, and his mother.
Mike’s legacy lives on in his family, friends, and former students whose lives he impacted through his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love.
We will celebrate Michael’s life with a Mass on Friday, September 19, 2025, at 11:00 A.M., at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Sun City West. There will be a visitation preceding the Mass beginning at 10:00 A.M. There will be a private burial in the veterans’ cemetery in Phoenix.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mike’s memory to Mana House (Manahouseaz.org). This organization supports veterans helping veterans in Arizona.
Please join Mike’s family in sharing memories, pictures or videos on his tribute wall at www.caminodelsol.com.
