An art piece by Anastasia Asbill, 11, of Mesa was chosen as one of the winning entries in OdySea Aquarium’s second annual conservation art challenge.

She was among five winners picked from 411 entries for her outstanding art piece made from recycled materials that showcased an endangered species to celebrate World Endangered Species Day and World Environment Day, according to a release.

Anastasia created a white Siberian tiger out of feathers, newspapers and thread, a creation that took her about two weeks to make. White Siberian tigers are extinct in the wild and can only be found in zoos.

In addition to receiving a free children’s admission ticket to the aquarium for submitting her art, the winners of the challenge — chosen by OdySea Aquarium’s Conservation Committee — were invited back to the aquarium recently with their immediate family for a special celebration. Each winner was awarded a priceless piece of art painted by an OdySea penguin or sea lion.

The lucky winners were then paid a visit from Holly, an African penguin that calls OdySea home. Holly was accompanied by OdySea Aquarium animal care specialists who shared facts about African penguins, an endangered species; and helped celebrate the winners. Everyone got a chance to meet Holly up-close and pose for photos with the animal ambassador.
