An arrest has been made in the shooting death of a Mesa teenager, police said Thursday.
Peter Clabron III, 18, was arrested for his involvement in the shooting death of 18-year-old Jeremiah Aviles, both of whom attend Red Mountain High School.
Clabron III was booked into jail on charges of manslaughter and unlawful discharge of a firearm for his role in a May 7 shooting that occurred in a house on the 2300 block of East Camino Street, police said.
Mesa police responded to the home about 2 a.m. May 7, learning that Clabron III lived at the house and was inside his bedroom with Aviles and a witness when Aviles was shot.
Aviles was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers obtained initial statements from both Clabron III and the witness about what happened, but later learned the information was not truthful and attempted to point blame at another person who was not in the bedroom during the shooting,” police said in a release.
“Eventually, the witness came forward and told the officers the truth.”
Police executed a search warrant and found “video evidence that shows Clabron III pointing a firearm several times at Jeremiah prior to and leading up to the shooting,” authorities said in the release.
In addition, they said, hours before the deadly shooting, witnesses identified Clabron III firing a handgun into the air from the back of a truck traveling though his neighborhood.
