Mesa school crowned state champion of 7th annual Vocabulary Bowl

Students from Red Mountain High School, in the Mesa Unified School District, emerged from the pack to win the Vocabulary Bowl’s Arizona state championship by mastering more than 95,000 words.

More than 43,500 schools across the U.S. and Canada vied for word domination in the seventh annual Vocabulary Bowl. Students battled it out virtually to see who could master the most words by answering as many questions as possible on Vocabulary.com, according to a release.

Winners of the seventh annual Vocabulary Bowl were Etiwanda High School, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, which made history with its fifth straight win; and McKenzie (Tennessee) Middle School, which won the middle/elementary school title, the release states.

Students from Red Mountain High School, in the Mesa Unified School District, emerged from the pack to win the Vocabulary Bowl’s Arizona state championship by mastering more than 95,000 words.

More than 43,500 schools across the U.S. and Canada vied for word domination in the seventh annual Vocabulary Bowl. Students battled it out virtually to see who could master the most words by answering as many questions as possible on Vocabulary.com, according to a release.

Winners of the seventh annual Vocabulary Bowl were Etiwanda High School, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, which made history with its fifth straight win; and McKenzie (Tennessee) Middle School, which won the middle/elementary school title, the release states.

“Each school will receive its Champions Cup at a special ceremony and all 50 U.S. state and nine Canadian provincial winners will be recognized for their bowl achievements with championship banners,” the release states.

The Vocabulary Bowl is hosted by Vocabulary.com, a destination for improving literacy through vocabulary building.

“It’s an honor to recognize the winners and participants of this year’s thrilling competition,” Kristin Eckhardt, senior marketing manager at Vocabulary.com, said in the release. “We are inspired by the collective accomplishments of the schools and students that demonstrated their unquenchable thirst for building literacy skills and developing a love of language.”
