Mesa police release cause of Scottsdale detective’s death

Posted

Scottsdale police detective Ryan So was shot in the line of duty after a rifle fell to the ground and discharged, according to preliminary information from the Mesa Police Department, which is investigating his death.

Scottsdale police released the information Friday night, a day after So was killed.

“Upon completing the service of a search warrant and arrest operation, detectives from the Special Assignment Unit were unloading equipment from a vehicle,” a release stated.

“While Detective Ryan So was moving a bag from the vehicle, a rifle within that bag fell to the ground, impacted the pavement, and discharged, striking Detective So. His fellow detectives immediately rendered aid.”

So, a nine-year veteran of the Scottsdale Police Department, died at a hospital following the incident that occurred about 7:30 p.m. June 13 near 76th Street and Greenway Road.

“The loss of Detective So is deeply felt throughout the entire community. We will forever honor his sacrifice and remember his legacy as a hero who dedicated his life to serving and protecting others,” Friday night’s release stated.
