Mesa police patrol radio signals may soon be encrypted

PD cites officer safety, First Amendment auditors for reasons

Mesa Police Department’s four primary patrol radio channels may soon be encrypted so transmissions cannot be heard by members of the public listening in.

The change is needed for officer safety and investigative purposes, Mesa Police Assistant Chief Ed Wessing said.

“An example would be if we are serving a search warrant, we do not want suspects to know we are coming and risk destroying evidence,” he said.
