Mesa police ID, charge man in Aug. 22 officer-involved shooting

Posted

A man accused of shooting at Mesa police officers and burglarizing a home has been booked into jail on numerous charges.

Abdul Basit Ishan, 21, was hospitalized in critical condition since the Aug. 22 shooting but was arrested upon his release this week and booked, according to police.

The incident began when Mesa police received a call from a woman who said someone had broken into her home near Country Club and Rio Salado Parkway.

Officers arrived and were setting up to approach the home. As they were doing so, a man ran out of the home, jumped a wall and attempted to hide in a patio of an adjoining apartment.

A short time later, he jumped another wall and hid inside a storage shed. The Mesa Air Unit saw he appeared to be holding a handgun, according to police.

“When officers attempted to approach the shed, several rounds were fired from the shed in their direction. Officers backed up, and the Chandler SWAT team arrived to assist,” a police statement read.

After several hours of trying to get the suspect to come out, a robot and drone were used and, police said, the suspect fired shots at both devices.

“Less lethal measures were deployed and when the suspect began to exit the shed, the officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said. The shooting took place at about 3:25 a.m. on Aug. 22.

No officers were injured.

Among the charges against Ishan are 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of first-degree burglary and two counts of criminal damage. There were 28 counts total.
