Nathan Hansen has been charged with aggravated assault after authorities  said the  52-year-old teacher was involved in an altercation with a 14-year-old student last week at the American Leadership Academy, Mesa police said Saturday.

Officers responded to a report that a teacher had assaulted a student just after 3 p.m. Nov. 6 at the school in the 7000 block of Pecos Road.

The incident occurred after the student approached Hansen and attempted to take a phone from his hand, police stated in a release. The teacher then allegedly pushed the student to the ground and then dragged him by the back of his hoodie.

Detectives from the Mesa Police Special Victims Unit were notified and assisted with the investigation.

“Surveillance video reviewed by detectives showed (Hansen) shoving the student to the ground, grabbing him by the back of his hoodie and dragging him off the basketball court before sliding him against the bleachers. The student suffered minor injuries as a result,” the release stated.

Investigators determined there was probable cause to arrest Hansen for aggravated assault by an adult on a minor under 15 years of age. He was contacted at his home, interviewed and subsequently arrested for aggravated assault.

Per ALA, Nathan was immediately placed on administrate leave, police said.
